2nd Student Peace Lecture

A significant victory for the Students Division of SSA. Soka Gakkai is an organization, though based on Nichiren Buddhism, is a dynamic organization that aims to promote Peace, Culture and Education in our secular world. Here in Singapore, SSA is very well-known for its efforts in culture with participation in NDP and Chingay. The average Singaporean has no problem identifying SSA with NDP, a national celebration which we have supported for 25 years and counting.

But that is only a third of our community activities. Today, the 2ns Student Peace Lecture took place with the attendance of many distinguished educators in Singapore. The lecture was on “Education: A Singapore Perspective” presented by Professor Cham Tao Soon, the man who can be said to shape the tertiary education in Singapore with his involvement in three of our local universities. The event was also chaired by Professor Leo Tan, who is currently the director of NIE, the main institute tasked with the training of educators in Singapore.

I am truly honored to be involved in the main committee such a signification event in the field of Education. I am also very proud that this Lecture, from conceptualization to the execution, is fully done by the Students Division. The SD had truly growth in the six years that I had been here.

My only regret is that my Principal was unable to attend this event at the last minute. But I will persevere. As long as I remain in this school I am teaching at, I will spare no energy to influence it in the direction of an institute imbued with the qualities of humanistic education.

Wisdom from Mother

According to my mother dearest, it is worst to end up with a gambling spouse than a cheating spouse.

A cheating spouse, out of guilt of breaking the marital vows, will generally be apologetic about it. Hence, they leave your personal life alone and it will be much easier to make a clean break when necessary.

A gambling habit, however, is trickier. Gambling per se is not a vital vice. In Singapore culture, a little gambling is a part and parcel of life as the general population place a little wager on games such as 4D and Toto. But the problem will arise if the gambling ever grew big enough to become an addiction and compulsion. And the wager you place grew beyond your means.

A gambling spouse who is also an addict will destroy the family, leaving debts behind even if a break is achieved. What makes it more painful is that the addict may not even realized that they have a serious flaw in their character.

Hence, my mother declared that it is worst to end up with a gambler than a womanizer. That is, unless the womanizer gives you the incurable diseases.

My call? Both are mistakes we should NEVER make. Case close!

...

I felt a bout of irritation and discomfort with Mrs Q mentioned that she is trying to introduce a boyfriend to her. My mind went blank for a while and mumble something about clothes being loose is a good excuse to buy some new ones….

~sigh~

I need to sort out my feelings somehow. It is starting to consume me.
